The Ontario government has announced a new investment in Brampton’s Heart Lake Conservation Area to restore the city’s natural wetlands.
Working in partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, the Ontario government aims to address erosion, upgrade stormwater infrastructure, remove invasive species, and plant new native vegetation across approximately 10 hectares of wetland.
“Wetlands are vital natural infrastructure,” Todd McCarthy, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, told reporters. “We do not have to choose between a strong economy and a healthy environment because with smart, practical action, we can continue to deliver both.”
Wetlands like those at Heart Lake not only act as beautiful natural spaces, full of plants and wildlife where residents can enjoy the outdoors — canoeing, bird watching, fishing, etc. — but they also act as a natural defence for homes and businesses against flooding.
According to a CBC report, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown echoed McCarthy’s sentiment, explaining that this project is not just about protecting the environment.
“It's about protecting residents, supporting our infrastructure and ensuring Brampton remains a great place for generations, for families to enjoy,” he said.
